The St. Dominic College of Asia (SDCA) has established itself as a premier nursing school in the province of Cavite. It has grown dramatically in the last eight years and the enrollees keep increasing every school year. This is proof that colleges and universities in Metro Manila do not have the monopoly of quality education.
Recognizing the demand for more hospitality and culinary crew, SDCA is now incorporating culinary and hospitality programs in its curriculum. The programs are in partnership with Technical and Further Education – New South Wales (TAFE-NSW) based in Sydney, Australia.
SDCA Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Gregorio A. Andaman, said that the growing need for trained and skilled culinary and hospitality experts prompted the school to have this partnership with TAFE-NSW. SDCA is now offering 10-month Certificate III in Commercial Cookery and short six-month courses Diploma IV in Hospitality Management and Certificate III in Patisserie and the one-year commercial cookery course, Hospitality Management-Certificate III. The Grand Diploma in Culinary Operations and Management is a two-year course for those who aim for further studies and a much higher position in the industry.
“We want our school—and students—to be more competitive,” said Andaman, “that is why we have this 100-percent international program that is compliant with Australian standards and qualifications.”
Christine Williamson, Faculty Director of TAFE-NSW is currently in the country to oversee the operations and execution of the program. “We instituted the same curriculum as what we have in Australia,” said Williamson, “because we believe that we all have to keep up with global standards.”
These programs open doors for graduates to establish careers in other countries including Australia. And because the program is exactly the same as the one given in Australia, the graduates have better chances for migration there.
“SDCA is always looking for opportunities both for the school and the students,” said Andaman, “When we learned about this program, we are already considering adding this course. We find it not only appealing but the fact that it will give more opportunities for graduates, we felt we found the right partner.”
To complement the international standards of education, SDCA built state-of-the-art facilities where students will practice what they have learned in the classroom. The administration has also built a patisserie where all students of the school can purchase the culinary students’ products and give feedback in return.
The first batch of students in the culinary and hospitality management is currently doing their on-the-job training at SDCA-TAFE-NSW partner hotels, restaurants, and resorts like Shangri-La Makati, Chelsea, Club Isabel in Talisay, Batangas to name a few.
During the summer, SDCA held learning sessions and cooking demonstrations to encourage students and the youth to take up the course. In these sessions, TAFE-NSW Institute Director Phil Cox did the presentation of the Grand Diploma of Culinary and Restaurant Operations which covers the theories, skills, and opportunities students could get.
TAFE-NSW is a vocational education and training institution run and operated by the Australian government. SDCA has been providing students, especially in Cavite quality education, options, and opportunities. Located strategically at the intersection of Aguinaldo Highway, Talaba, Bacoor, Cavite.
