Duterte heads for resounding victory

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte headed for decisive victory in presidential race.


Philippines’ president elect Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to start hanging murderers, rapists and drug dealers after winning a landslide victory at the polls with his ruthless “war on crime” platform. The 71-year-old tough talking mayor of Davao City, is set to clinch the presidency after earning more than 16 million votes in the recent elections. Duterte, who has an unbeatable lead in unofficial tallies in the country’s presidential race, will push to rewrite the constitution and change to a federal system of government, his spokesman has said. “You will feel more and more alone the longer you’re there. You will have more and more complex problems that have to be dealt with, and the public will say yesterday”, President Aquino said in an interview with CNN when asked about his advice to successor, aired last May 11.

“But at the end of the day, I guess if you are focused on our people and people and show you have trust in God, you will get to where you want to go”, Aquino added. Duterte, the firebrand politician who promised a strong anti-crime drive and charter change on economic provisions, will formally take over the reins of Malacañan by noon of June 30. The camp of the Duterte earlier said the inauguration ceremony would be simple and frugal. According to the Commission on Elections, results of the elections are expected to be done by the end of the month.
